The state of Florida’s Coral Reef is dire, but that doesn’t mean all hope is lost.

In this next edition of LIVE@Frost Science on Wednesday, November 8, Dr. Les Kaufman of Boston University will present Breathing New Life Into Florida’s Coral Reef. Dr. Kaufman will lay out his argument for why we should be hopeful about the future of Florida’s Coral Reef. This year’s ocean warming brought devastating mass coral bleaching and death to Florida’s Coral Reef, much of which has also been affected by Stony Coral Tissue Loss Disease. Neither climate change nor coral disease are going away anytime soon, leading pessimists to despair that efforts to steward our reef back to health are doomed. But there is reason to hope: Florida’s Coral Reef is resilient, and there are strong conservation strategies in place.

Florida’s Coral Reef is also a ward of the world’s most sophisticated and dedicated army of scientists, conservationists, ocean-lovers and volunteers intent on doing whatever is needed to ensure that the Reef will survive and even thrive into the future. In his talk, Dr. Kaufman will tell this story through the lens of Mission: Iconic Reefs, a multilateral NOAA-led effort to steward our reef back to health.
